The first SOC 2 number most teams hear is the audit fee, and it is usually the smallest honest part of the bill. The auditor quote is the tip; the platform, the penetration test, the fixes and the hours your own people spend sit under the water.
Illustration only, not to scale. The size of each layer depends on your team, your auditor and how much security work is already in place.
Every line on a real SOC 2 budget
These are the cost lines that appear in almost every first SOC 2 project. The ranges come from the SOC 2 Auditors Directory, which aggregates published fees and buyer reports and last refreshed its cost data on October 27, 2026.
- 1
The audit itself
The fee a licensed CPA firm charges to test your controls and sign the report. It moves with report type, the Trust Services Criteria in scope, the number of systems and the firm you choose.
$5k to $200kby tier and size - 2
Compliance platform
Software that connects to your cloud, identity and HR tools, tracks controls and collects evidence. Optional, but most small teams use one because it replaces weeks of screenshots.
$3.6k to $98.3kper year - 3
Penetration test
Not a hard SOC 2 requirement, but auditors and enterprise buyers expect one as evidence of vulnerability management.
$5k to $20kSOC 2 scope - 4
Readiness help
A gap assessment before the audit window starts, from the auditor’s advisory arm, a consultant or a platform partner.
$4k to $20kone time - 5
Remediation
Fixing what the gap assessment finds: device management, logging, single sign on, background checks, backups, training.
$5k to $50kmostly year one - 6
Your team’s hours
Writing policies, closing gaps, answering auditor requests. Buyers report 300 to 600 hours for a first Type 2. It rarely appears on an invoice, which is why it is forgotten.
$25k to $90kin salary value
Two smaller lines catch people out: mid engagement change orders when scope grows ($10,000 to $30,000 reported) and report amendments ($2,000 to $5,000).
What the audit fee looks like by team size
The directory publishes starting budgets for the simplest case: Security criteria only, one straightforward system, controls already ready to test. Treat these as floors, not quotes.
| Team size | Type 1 audit | Type 2 audit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 50 employees | $5,000 to $7,000 | $7,000 to $10,000 |
| 51 to 200 employees | $7,500 to $10,500 | $10,500 to $15,000 |
| 201 to 500 employees | $10,000 to $14,000 | $16,000 to $22,500 |

The firm you pick matters more than your headcount
The same report can cost several times more depending on who signs it. These are the directory’s Type 2 planning bands by auditor group:
Most mid market buyers accept a report from any licensed CPA firm with SOC experience. Ask your largest prospect before paying the Big Four premium; the answer is often “any reputable firm”.
What the platforms actually sell for
List prices are rarely public, so purchase data is the better guide. Vendr’s marketplace pages, last updated February 2026, show these annual contract values:
Prices depend on frameworks, headcount and contract length. For features rather than price, see best SOC 2 compliance software and Vanta vs Drata.
Build your own three year budget
Start from a profile, then overwrite any number with a real quote. The tool separates cash from staff time, the way finance teams usually want to see it, and checks how much of the picture a single quote covers.
Profiles use points inside the published ranges cited in this guide; they are starting values, not quotes. Nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere.
Year two: what drops away and what does not
The directory also models year two cash for three company profiles. Readiness and most remediation disappear; the audit, the platform and the penetration test return.
Year two cash only, staff time excluded. SOC 2 Auditors Directory, figures checked October 2026.
One timing detail changes the calendar more than the bill: if your first Type 2 uses a 3 month observation window, the second examination arrives about 9 months sooner than with a 12 month window. The directory notes that a shorter first period does not reliably cost less; that depends on the firm. The trade off is explained in SOC 2 Type 1 vs Type 2.
Where the money leaks, and the cheaper habit
If ISO 27001 or ISO 42001 is on your roadmap, map shared controls now so the evidence is collected once. See ISO 42001 explained.
Questions people ask before budgeting
Who can issue a SOC 2 report?
Only a licensed CPA firm, under AICPA attestation standards. Platforms and consultants can prepare you, but they cannot sign the report.
Can we skip the compliance platform?
Yes. It is not required. Teams without one pay instead in hours spent gathering evidence by hand, so compare the platform price with your hourly cost.
Is a penetration test mandatory?
SOC 2 does not name one explicitly, but most auditors and buyers expect it as proof of vulnerability management. Budget for it every year.
Why do quotes for the same company differ so much?
Firm tier, criteria in scope, number of systems and how ready your controls are. Ask each firm to quote the same written scope so you compare like with like.
Is Type 1 money wasted?
Not if a deal needs proof this quarter. Otherwise it is an extra audit fee on the way to the Type 2 that most buyers ask for.
Does the price cover the whole company?
Only what is in scope. A tight scope is the single biggest lever on the audit fee.
New to the framework? Start with what SOC 2 compliance is.
Before you sign anything, ask these
Send these to every auditor and platform you shortlist. The answers make quotes comparable.
- Which Trust Services Criteria and which systems does this price cover?
- Is the readiness assessment included, or quoted separately?
- What triggers a change order, and at what rate?
- What will the renewal year audit cost, and is that in writing?
- For platforms: what is the maximum price increase at renewal?
- Do you work with our compliance platform, and does that change the fee?
